When should I go to an Urgent Care?
If you are dealing with an urgent medical concern and are unsure of where the best place to seek medical attention is, there is a good chance that an urgent care clinic can meet your needs! In fact, the only time that you should not go to an urgent care clinic is if you are experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency, as only emergency rooms are equipped to treat such cases. In most other instances, urgent care clinics are a cost-effective and time-saving place to receive medical care.
Some specific reasons to visit an urgent care clinic include if you lack a primary care physician or are unable to make a same-day appointment with them, if your injury or illness does not warrant a trip to the emergency room and you would prefer to avoid the long wait times, or if it is the weekend and your only other option is the emergency room.
Whereas primary care clinic appointments depend on the physician’s availability, urgent care clinics accept walk-in appointments, which means that you can see a doctor for your medical concern that same day. Additionally, urgent care clinics are also known for having shorter wait times and significantly less expensive services than emergency rooms. While both urgent care clinics and emergency rooms conduct patient evaluations to determine if a patient should be seen immediately or is safe to wait in the order of their arrival, the volume of patients requiring immediate care is much less at urgent care clinics than at the ER. Consequently, this allows urgent care clinics to operate on a first-come, first-served basis with more regularity than ERs, reducing wait times.
With that said, if you are looking for same-day, timely, and affordable medical care for an injury or illness that is not life-threatening, an urgent care clinic like ours at East County Urgent Care is the place to go!
