So, what exactly is Botox?
Botox is derived from nature from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. This bacterium causes botulism, which in large amounts can be dangerous. However, in a Botox treatment, we only inject very small amounts along with your wrinkles. A successful Botox treatment will stop the processes that cause wrinkles to appear. It may not be able to reverse deep wrinkles, but it will lessen them.
How does a Botox treatment work?
When you receive a Botox treatment, it is injected into muscles near your wrinkles. A wrinkle appears when these muscles do not fully release from contracting, which is a natural result of years of laughing, smiling, or squinting. When we inject small amounts of Botox into these muscles, it relaxes them releasing the wrinkles. We use the paralyzing properties of Botox to help your muscles relax. The result is smoother looking skin with less or eliminated wrinkles.
Is there any discomfort during the procedure? How long will this treatment last?
Most patients only report a little discomfort during injections. However, talk with one of our experts about this, and we may apply some numbing cream or ice to the area to help reduce the sensation of an injection. While a Botox treatment relaxes your muscles, it will not cause numbness in the area. Treatments will usually not take more than ten minutes.
Please allow up to four days for Botox to start to take effect and relax your muscles. We’ve found results last up to four months. Once the Botox begins to wear off, your muscles will return to normal, and you will start to see wrinkles again. If you like how you look after a treatment, you should expect to repeat it three to four times a year.
Do I need to alter any of my activities after treatment? Is there any recovery time?
Our experts will give you detailed instructions on what you can and can’t do following the treatment. However, we do suggest that you do not lay down and avoid bending over for at least six hours. Why? This recommendation prevents the injection from seeping into other muscles near the injection site. If it spreads, it can cause unwanted muscles to relax, spoiling your desired look. Some patients report a dry mouth after a treatment session. We suggest sucking on some sugar-free candy to alleviate any dry mouth.
We do recommend that if you have surgery, dental work, or go to an emergency room, you inform that doctor that you have had a recent Botox treatment.
